Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) — on the Dutch side — is the main gateway for all international visitors. Nearly every flight from the US, Canada, and Europe lands here. It’s also the airport famous for the low-flying planes over Maho Beach, if you want to tick that off your bucket list on arrival day.
Grand Case – Espérance Airport (SFG) — on the French side — is a small regional airport serving Caribbean island hops: Anguilla, St Barths, Guadeloupe. If you’re island-hopping or staying in Grand Case or Orient Bay, it can be useful for onward connections, but it won’t be your entry point from North America.
For 99% of travelers: fly into SXM.
New York is one of the best-served gateways to St Maarten, with three airlines flying nonstop from JFK:
💡 JetBlue tends to offer the best value on this route and flies it year-round. Book early for holiday travel — this route fills up fast between December and April.
From cities without nonstop service — Houston, Washington DC, Denver, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles — you’ll typically connect through Miami (AA), Charlotte (AA), Atlanta (Delta), or New York (JetBlue/Delta). Travel time with one stop is usually 6–8 hours depending on the layover.
💡 Canadian flights to SXM are heavily seasonal. If you’re traveling in January or February, book 3–4 months in advance — these flights sell out. Off-season (May–October), you’ll find more flexibility and better prices.
💡 From Paris, the flight time is approximately 8h30. Air France offers the most consistent schedule year-round. Air Caraïbes tends to be more affordable but operates mainly in high season.
High season (December – April): This is when St Martin is at its best — dry, sunny, and warm. It’s also when flights are most expensive and fill up fastest. Book 3–6 months in advance if you’re traveling during Christmas, New Year’s, or spring break.
Shoulder season (May, November): Pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and noticeably lower fares. A great window if your schedule allows flexibility.
Low season (June – October): Hurricane season. Prices are lowest, but some properties and restaurants close. The island is quieter and some weeks bring heavy rain. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.
💡 From my experience living here: the sweet spot is late January through March. The weather is perfect, the island is lively, and while prices are high, you’re getting St Martin at its absolute best.
Compare departure dates. Even shifting by one or two days can make a meaningful difference in price, especially around US holidays.
Watch your baggage. Budget carriers like Spirit and Frontier can look cheap until you add a checked bag. Always compare the total price including luggage before booking.
Arrive before 2pm if you can. Landing earlier gives you time to pick up your rental car, check in, and settle before sunset. Trust me — arriving at SXM in the late afternoon, rushing to your villa in the dark, is not how you want to start your vacation.
Book your rental car early. SXM has limited inventory and cars go fast in high season. If you land without a reservation, you may be stuck.
Connections to SXM often go through major US hubs — Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, New York — and delays happen. If your flight is disrupted, you may be entitled to compensation depending on the airline and the circumstances.
AirHelp handles flight compensation claims on your behalf — if your flight was delayed by more than 3 hours, cancelled, or overbooked, they’ll assess your case and claim what you’re owed. No upfront cost — they only charge if they win.
Once your flight is booked, the next step is accommodation. St Martin has something for every style of travel:
And don’t forget: renting a car is strongly recommended. The island is small but spread out, and having your own wheels makes everything easier — from beach-hopping to finding that hidden restaurant in Grand Case.
