Calmos Café Grand Case

Some places aren’t just restaurants.
They become part of people’s memories.

For years, Calmos Café was one of those places in Grand Case. A sunset drink after the beach. Music drifting into the street. Long dinners that somehow turned into even longer nights. For many of us who’ve lived on the island for a long time, Calmos wasn’t just somewhere you went — it was part of island life itself.

Then Hurricane Irma came in 2017.
And like so many beloved places in St Martin, Calmos disappeared overnight.

For six years, the restaurant remained silent.

So when I heard it was finally reopening, I’ll admit it: I was nervous. Not about the food. About the feeling. Because places like this are fragile. Sometimes they reopen… but the soul is gone.

Thankfully, that’s not what happened here.

Yes, Calmos Café has changed. The old colorful beach-bar spirit has evolved into something softer and more refined. Warm woods, natural textures and elegant pastel tones now give the place a calmer, more timeless atmosphere.

And despite Mother Nature reclaiming part of the shoreline after Irma, the atmosphere itself remains untouched. The beach is much smaller now, so the famous “feet in the sand” experience isn’t quite what it once was. But strangely, after a few minutes there, you stop thinking about that entirely.

Because what made Calmos special was never just the sand.

It was always the energy.

That feeling comes back the moment the cocktails arrive.

The bar menu is genuinely excellent. Not “good for a beach restaurant” excellent — genuinely creative, balanced and beautifully executed. You can immediately tell the team behind it actually cares about mixology. Some cocktails feel tropical and playful, others more refined and spirit-forward, but almost all of them have that dangerous quality of making you want a second one immediately.

The service also deserves to be mentioned. And honestly, in 2026, that’s becoming rare enough to matter.

The team feels professional in the best possible way: attentive without being stiff, energetic without becoming overwhelming. You can feel that they genuinely want people to have a good time. That may sound like a small detail, but for me, it changes everything in a restaurant experience.

And the food?

Still very good.

The menu has evolved over the years and feels slightly more elevated than the old Calmos many people remember, but some classics remain. Longtime island regulars will instantly smile when they spot the famous New Wave Burger still on the menu.

And Alex?

Still exactly the same.

Same smile. Same warmth. Same effortless ability to make the place feel alive.

A few weeks ago, I changed the cover photo on the BookStMartin Facebook page to a picture of Calmos Café. An American follower commented:

“Quintessential St. Martin.”

Honestly, I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Because Calmos Café captures something many places try to imitate but rarely achieve: the true spirit of St Martin. Relaxed but lively. Friendly without trying too hard. Good food, good cocktails, familiar faces, music, laughter and that strange island feeling that makes hours disappear without you noticing.

Irma changed the building.
Time changed the decor.
But the soul of Calmos Café survived.

And honestly, that’s probably the most beautiful part of this story.

So if you’ve never been before, I genuinely recommend discovering it for yourself.

And if you already knew the old Calmos, go back too. Not just for the memories, but to experience this new version of one of Grand Case’s most iconic places.

Because deep down, almost everyone here has a memory connected to Calmos.
Feet in the sand… or not.
