Orient Bay — where the French side comes alive

Two kilometers of white sand, turquoise water, beach restaurants with your feet in the sand, and a proper village square just steps behind. It has everything in one place.

People call it the St Tropez of the Caribbean. I live here, and honestly — it fits. The same energy, the same mix of beautiful setting and real life happening around it. Except the water is warmer and the vibe is more relaxed.

The problem is that when you land on Expedia or Booking, you’re looking at fifty options, similar photos, and review scores that don’t tell you much about what it actually feels like to stay somewhere. I’ve been watching these hotels operate for years. I know which ones deliver, who they’re right for, and what the experience is really like day to day.

I put this guide together to give you the context the booking sites don’t. Hope it helps you make the right choice.

What it's actually like to be here

Orient Bay is busy. Especially December through April.

That’s not a warning — it’s just useful to know before you arrive. The beach fills up, the beach clubs get lively, and the village hums with people from morning to evening. That energy is part of what makes it special.

But Orient Bay is also bigger than it looks on a map. Two kilometers of beach means you can always find your spot. The northern end near the village is where most of the action is — beach clubs, restaurants, water sports. Walk ten minutes south and it gets noticeably quieter.

What a typical day looks like here: Morning swim before 9am — the beach is almost empty and the light is extraordinary. Settle into a beach club by mid-morning. Long lunch. Afternoon in the water or on a lounger. Sunset drink at Bikini Beach or Kontiki. Dinner in the village.

Repeat until you have to leave.

One thing we always tell people: bring a car. Orient Bay is easy to walk within, but the rest of the island — Grand Case, Marigot, the beaches further north — all require wheels. Don’t rely on taxis.

Directly on the beach. Gardens, croissants, and a team people come back for.

Hotels Orient Bay St Martin
@Orient Beach Hotel

You walk through a tropical garden to reach the beach. Every morning. That detail alone tells you something about this place.

Orient Beach Hotel is the most established beachfront address in Orient Bay — on the sand, steps from KKO beach club where breakfast is included, and surrounded by everything the village has to offer. Rooms have ocean views, small kitchens, private terraces.

What guests mention most, year after year: the staff. Not in a generic way — in the specific way that makes people rebook before they’ve even left.

I’ve watched this hotel operate for years. It earns its reputation.

Best for: First-timers who want the full Orient Bay experience — and anyone who already knows it and keeps coming back.

La Playa Orient Bay

Right on Orient Bay. Order the sushis.

@La Playa hotel

La Playa has been part of Orient Bay for as long as I can remember. Right on the beach — same stretch, same turquoise water — but with a character that’s entirely its own.

The rooms are spacious, most with private balconies and a real ocean view. But what people come back for is the restaurant. Seafood, sushis that are genuinely good, long lunches with your feet practically in the sand. It’s one of the best tables on the beach — not just “for a hotel restaurant.” Just good.

Orient Bay Village is one minute on foot for the evenings.

I’d recommend La Playa for couples who want a beachfront institution with one of Orient Bay’s best lunch spots right on-site.

Palm Court Residence & Hotel

9.2/10 ⭐ 458+ verified reviews · ✅ Free cancellation
A quiet retreat — one minute from the beach

Hotels Orient Bay St Martin
@Palm Court hotel

Palm Court has been here since 1992 and has never really needed to reinvent itself. It’s the kind of address that gets passed on, rediscovered, chosen by people who know what they want.

Not directly on the sand — two minutes on foot — but what you get in exchange is quiet. Twenty-one suites in a tropical garden planted with bougainvillea and hibiscus, a pool at the centre of it all, and breakfast served outside every morning. Moroccan-inspired decor, private terraces, kitchenettes.

On the beach side, Palm Court has an arrangement with Waï Plage — free sun loungers and umbrellas when you have lunch there.

I’d recommend Palm Court to anyone who wants to be at Orient Bay without the beach noise. Quiet nights, slow mornings, and a five-minute walk from everything.

Hotel La Plantation

8.8/10 ⭐ 602+ verified reviews · ✅ Free cancellation
Creole bungalows in a tropical garden, on the hillside above Orient Bay.

@La Plantation

La Plantation sits on the hillside above Orient Bay — not on the sand, but with something the beachfront hotels don’t have: a view over the whole bay, and the trade winds that come with the elevation.

Seventeen Creole-style villas spread across seven acres of tropical gardens. Bougainvillea, hibiscus, palm trees, shingled rooftops. Large terraces, kitchenettes, breakfast included every morning. The upper rooms look out over the bay and the surrounding islands — it’s the kind of view you sit with for a while before going anywhere.

The beach is a five-minute walk. La Plantation has arrangements with several beach clubs for free sun loungers — so the logistics take care of themselves.

I’d recommend La Plantation to anyone who wants the full Orient Bay experience but prefers to sleep somewhere quieter, cooler, and genuinely beautiful. A car helps. The views are worth it.

Esmeralda Resort

8.6/10 ⭐ 520+ verified reviews · ✅ Free cancellation
Private pool bungalows in a tropical garden. And one of the best restaurants in Orient Bay.

@Esmeralda Resort

Esmeralda has been here since 1991 and it has never tried to be anything other than what it is — a collection of pastel-coloured Creole villas in a tropical garden, steps from Orient Bay beach, with one of the best restaurants on the French side right at its centre.

Fourteen villas spread across three hectares of bougainvillea and coconut palms. Each has its own private pool. The rooms are spacious, the terraces generous, and the whole property has that rare quality of feeling genuinely removed from the outside world while being three minutes from the beach.

L’Astrolabe is the real draw beyond the setting. Chef Patrick Guillerm does modern French — lobster cappuccino with foie gras ravioli, fresh grilled lobster on Fridays, a millefeuille that people talk about long after they’ve left the island. Dinner by the pool, live music three nights a week. I’d go even if I wasn’t staying here.

I’d recommend Esmeralda for couples who want privacy, a beautiful property, and a restaurant worth staying in for — without giving up beach access.

Prefer a villa or a condo instead?

Hotels are great for simplicity. But if you’re traveling with family, a group of friends, or simply want more space and your own kitchen — a villa or condo in Orient Bay changes the whole experience. Many are steps from the beach, with private pools and terraces that no hotel room can match.

Things to do near Orient Bay

The beach takes care of most of your day. But when you’re ready to explore a little further, here are three things worth knowing about.

🪂 Parasailing over Orient Bay The best way to see the beach from above — and understand just how beautiful this coastline really is. The boat departs directly from Orient Bay. Ten to fifteen minutes in the air, spectacular views, back on the sand before lunch.
You can book here →

🚣 Kayak at Pinel Island — Cul de Sac Ten minutes by car from Orient Bay, Cul de Sac is where you take the little ferry to Pinel Island — one of the most beautiful spots on the French side. Kayaking around the island in that turquoise water is genuinely hard to beat.

Getting Around Once You're Here

Orient Bay itself is completely walkable — beach, restaurants, village, all on foot. You won’t need a car for your first day.

But the rest of the island is a different story. Grand Case is 20 minutes away. Marigot, the airport, the Dutch side — none of it is walkable. If you want to explore beyond Orient Bay, a rental car is the obvious answer.

Best Time to Visit Orient Bay

High season runs December through April. The weather is perfect — warm, dry, breezy — and the beach is at its most lively. It’s also when everything fills up fastest. Hotels book out months in advance, beach clubs get busy by mid-morning, and prices are at their highest.

If you can be flexible, May and November are the sweet spot. The crowds thin out, prices drop, and Orient Bay is still beautiful. The water is warm, the restaurants are open, and you’ll have more of the beach to yourself.

July and August bring the French summer crowd — families mostly, a different energy from the winter season. Busy but fun.

One thing we always say: whenever you’re coming, book your hotel early. Orient Bay has a limited number of good properties, and the best ones go first — regardless of the season.
