Where is Maho Beach — and how do you get there?
Maho Beach sits on the Dutch side of St Maarten, right beside Princess Juliana International Airport. The runway starts just behind the road, which is why arriving planes pass so low over the sand before touching down.
The beach is only a few minutes from Simpson Bay, Mullet Bay and Cupecoy, so it is easy to build a full Dutch-side day around it. From Philipsburg or the cruise port, allow extra time: the distance is not huge, but traffic around Simpson Bay and Maho can change the whole plan.
Most visitors arrive by taxi, rental car or organized excursion. There is paid parking close to the beach, plus more parking around Maho Village, but it fills quickly when cruise ships are in port or big afternoon flights are expected.

The landings are the reason Maho became famous around the world. Aircraft approach over the Caribbean, line up with Princess Juliana Airport, then pass directly over the beach at what feels like an impossible height.

When larger aircraft power up to depart, the blast can be extremely strong. The warning signs by the fence are there because people have been seriously injured here. You do not need to stand on the fence to feel the experience. The beach itself is close enough.

If it gets too busy, Mullet Bay is only a few minutes away and gives you a more classic Caribbean beach day. That is why I love pairing the two: Maho for the spectacle, Mullet for the longer swim.

It has the flight board, the big crowd, the music, the cocktails and that full Maho atmosphere people imagine before they arrive. On cruise-heavy days it can be packed, but on the right day it is pure St Maarten holiday energy.
