Cupecoy Beach, St Maarten: cliffs, coves and sunset drama

Cupecoy is not the beach you choose for a long row of beach bars or a perfectly predictable beach day. It is the beach you choose when you want golden cliffs, small hidden coves, late-afternoon light, and one of the most distinctive landscapes on the Dutch side.

What makes Cupecoy special is also what makes it a beach you need to understand before you go. The sand shifts. Some coves can look generous one month and almost disappear another day depending on the tide, swell and season. The access is down uneven stone steps. And the atmosphere is more adult, more quiet, and more naturally private than the big, easy beaches people usually visit first.

That is exactly why I like it. Cupecoy feels different. It has that dramatic west-end energy: cliffs above you, the Caribbean in front of you, Mullet Bay just around the corner, Porto Cupecoy across the road, and sunsets that can stop a whole conversation.

Quick local verdict: Cupecoy is best for cliffs, photos, sunset, quiet coves and a more grown-up beach mood. It is not the best choice if you need easy access, guaranteed sand, lots of services or a classic family beach day.
Location

Where is Cupecoy Beach?

Cupecoy sits on the far western Dutch side of Sint Maarten, right near the French-Dutch border and just beyond Maho and Mullet Bay. This is the Lowlands side of the island: more residential, more dramatic, and closer to the cliffs than the flat beach strips around Simpson Bay.

By car, Cupecoy is only a few minutes from Maho, around 10 to 15 minutes from Simpson Bay, and roughly 30 to 40 minutes from Philipsburg or Grand Case depending on traffic. It pairs naturally with Mullet Bay, Maho Beach, Porto Cupecoy and the Terres Basses beaches on the French side.

Victoria's practical note: come by car and keep your plans flexible. Cupecoy is beautiful, but it is not a beach where you want to arrive carrying too much or depending on taxis to come back at exactly the right time.

What Cupecoy Beach is really like

Cupecoy is not one single wide beach. It is more like a series of small coves carved into golden sandstone cliffs, with pockets of sand appearing between the rocks. That is what makes it so photogenic. You do not get the long, flat, easy feeling of Mullet Bay. You get a much more sculpted coastline, with shade from the cliffs, natural corners, and a sense of privacy that feels rare on the Dutch side.

The water can be gorgeous here, especially on calm days, but Cupecoy is more exposed than it looks. When the sea is gentle, it can feel like a secret swimming spot. When the swell is up, the waves can come close to the cliffs and the beach becomes less comfortable. This is not a place to force a swim if the water looks rough.

Best for Cliff views, photos, sunsets, quiet coves and a more private beach mood.
Think twice if You need easy stairs, guaranteed sand, bathrooms, shade rentals or a classic family setup.
Nearby backup Mullet Bay is only minutes away and is easier when the sand or swell at Cupecoy is not ideal.
Local reality

Why Cupecoy can look different every time you go

Cupecoy Beach cliffs and sea

This is the detail most quick travel guides miss: Cupecoy changes. The sand is not always where you expect it to be. Some days you find beautiful little sandy coves at the bottom of the cliffs. Other days, the water has taken most of the beach and you are left with rock, steps and waves.

That does not make Cupecoy disappointing. It just means you should not plan it like Orient Bay or Mullet Bay. Think of it as a dramatic coastal stop first, and a beach day second. When conditions are right, it becomes one of the most memorable places on the island. When conditions are not ideal, you still have the cliffs, the views and sunset — then you can move to Mullet Bay for an easier swim.

The rule that matters: if you want the best chance of sand and easier swimming, go when the sea is calm and avoid arriving blindly after several days of heavy swell.
Naturist note

The clothing-optional side of Cupecoy

Cupecoy has long had a clothing-optional reputation, especially in the quieter coves away from the main access points. It is not organized like a naturist resort, and it does not have the same official history as Orient Bay, but on the Dutch side it remains one of the places most associated with a relaxed naturist beach culture.

The important thing is to read the mood of the beach. Some days you may see naturists, some days not at all. Couples, solo travelers, gay travelers, residents and repeat visitors all use the area, and the atmosphere usually stays discreet because the coves naturally create space.

Simple etiquette: keep it respectful, do not photograph people, choose a quieter section if you want privacy, and remember that the main access areas can feel more mixed depending on the day.
Best time

When to visit Cupecoy Beach

Late afternoon is Cupecoy's magic hour. The cliffs turn warmer, the shadows become softer, and the whole coastline gets that golden west-side glow that makes the beach feel more cinematic than almost anywhere else on the Dutch side.

For swimming and easier access, earlier in the day can be more comfortable, especially when the sea is calm. For photos and atmosphere, go later. If you want sunset, bring what you need with you and do not assume there will be full beach service available exactly when you arrive.

MorningBetter if you care most about easier swimming and a calmer beach.
Late afternoonThe best light, the prettiest cliffs and the most romantic atmosphere.
After swellCheck conditions first. The sand can be reduced and the sea can feel rougher.
Nearby

Porto Cupecoy makes the beach easier

One of the reasons Cupecoy works well as a stay area is that you are not isolated. Porto Cupecoy sits just nearby on the lagoon side, with a Mediterranean-style marina village, restaurants, boutiques and a Carrefour supermarket. It gives the area a polished, convenient side that balances the wilder feeling of the beach.

This is useful because Cupecoy Beach itself is not a full-service beach in the way travelers might imagine. You may find chairs or drinks available depending on the day and who is there, but I would not plan the whole experience around guaranteed beach-club service. Porto Cupecoy is where you go before or after for lunch, groceries, dinner or an easier evening.

Good plan: swim or walk Cupecoy when the conditions look right, then finish the day around Porto Cupecoy or Maho for dinner, drinks and a more comfortable evening setup.
Where to stay

Where to stay near Cupecoy Beach

Cupecoy is a good base if you want the Dutch side without being directly in the middle of Maho's energy every minute. You are close to Mullet Bay, Maho Beach, Simpson Bay, the airport, Porto Cupecoy and the French side of Terres Basses. That mix makes it especially useful for travelers who plan to explore.

The area is more condo and residence-oriented than hotel-heavy. Rainbow Beach Club, Sapphire Beach Club, Porto Cupecoy and the cliffside residences are the kind of places people look at here: more space, kitchens, terraces and sunset views rather than classic hotel service.

FAQ

Cupecoy Beach: practical questions before you go

Is Cupecoy Beach worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you want something different from the classic wide beaches of St Maarten. Cupecoy is known for its golden cliffs, small coves, dramatic scenery and sunsets. It is less predictable than Mullet Bay, but much more distinctive.

Does Cupecoy Beach always have sand?

No. The sand at Cupecoy changes with the tide, swell and season. Some days the coves have beautiful sandy pockets; other days the water reaches close to the rocks and cliffs. That is part of the local reality of this beach.

Is Cupecoy Beach clothing optional?

Cupecoy has traditionally had a clothing-optional reputation, especially in the quieter coves away from the main access points. It is not a formal naturist resort, so the mood can vary by day, but discreet naturist use is part of the beach's long-standing identity.

Is Cupecoy good for families?

It can be beautiful for older children or teenagers who are comfortable with steps, rocks and changing beach conditions. For young children, Mullet Bay is usually easier because the access, sand and swimming are more predictable.

Are there restaurants or beach bars at Cupecoy?

Do not plan Cupecoy like a full beach-club beach. You may find chairs, drinks or casual service depending on the day, but the safer approach is to bring water and anything essential. Porto Cupecoy nearby is the more reliable option for restaurants, groceries and a comfortable meal.

When is the best time to visit Cupecoy Beach?

Late afternoon is the most beautiful time for light and sunset. Morning can be better for swimming if the sea is calm. Avoid forcing a swim when there is swell, because Cupecoy can become rougher and the sand can disappear in places.

Can you walk from Cupecoy to Mullet Bay?

They are very close by car and only a short distance apart, but walking along the road is not always the most pleasant option. With a car, it is easy to visit both in the same day and use Mullet Bay as the easier swimming beach.

Where should I stay near Cupecoy?

Cupecoy works best for travelers who like condos, residences and sunset views more than traditional hotel service. Rainbow Beach Club, Porto Cupecoy, Sapphire Beach Club and nearby Maho or Simpson Bay are the main areas to compare.
