How much does it cost to rent a car in St Maarten?
The honest answer: between $30 and $80 per day for a standard vehicle, depending on the season, how far in advance you book, and which company you go with.
But that range hides a lot. The same compact car can cost $35/day if you book three weeks out in low season — or $90/day if you walk up to a counter at SXM Airport in February with no reservation. I’ve watched people do exactly that.
What actually drives the price
The season matters more than anything else. December through April is peak season — high demand, limited inventory, prices that climb fast. September and October are the cheapest months on the island, with rates 30–40% lower than peak. If your dates are flexible, that’s where the savings are.

Which car do you actually need?
2 people, light luggage — a compact is perfectly fine. Roads are paved, distances are short (most of the island is 20-30 minutes from anywhere). No need to overspend on an SUV.
3-4 people or a family — go mid-size minimum. Luggage adds up fast and you’ll want the trunk space.
Group of 4+ or families with kids and gear — SUV or Jeep. The island has some hilly roads and the extra comfort makes a real difference over a week. A Jeep also makes you feel like you’re actually in the Caribbean, not just driving through it.
My local recommendation: most visitors do just fine with a compact or mid-size. Don’t let the rental counter upsell you to a category you don’t need.
The Airport price trap
This is the most important thing on this page.
When you book online in advance, suppliers compete for your business across dozens of platforms. Prices are transparent and you can compare everything side by side before you commit.
When you arrive at SXM Airport without a reservation, the situation is different. In high season — December through April — cars are often simply not available. The lot is empty. I’ve seen people land on a Friday afternoon in February with no booking and spend an hour calling around before finding anything. When something is available last minute, the price reflects the desperation, not the market.
The international brands (Hertz, Alamo, Sixt, Budget, Enterprise) have desks directly inside the terminal. Local companies operate from lots just outside with free shuttle vans — and they’re often the better value when booked in advance. But nobody, local or international, can conjure a car that isn’t there.
Book before you fly. It takes five minutes and it’s the one thing I’d never skip.
What gets added on top
The base daily rate is rarely the final number. Here’s what typically gets added:
