Anse Marcel guide

Anse Marcel, St Martin: the hidden bay of the French side

Anse Marcel is the bay that doesn’t announce itself.

Some places in St Martin arrive loudly. Anse Marcel has never worked like that.

You leave the main road, climb over the hills, and for a few minutes it almost feels like you’re driving away from the island rather than deeper into it. The road curves through thick vegetation, the sea disappears completely, and then suddenly — the bay opens below you.

Calm water. Green hills folding around the marina. A long crescent of pale sand that somehow always seems quieter than the rest of the island, even in high season.

People come here for a certain version of St Martin: morning coffee overlooking the marina, long lunches that quietly become sunset drinks, families returning every year to the same residence, and sailboats moving slowly across the bay while the beach stays almost perfectly calm.

And somehow, despite how developed the area actually is — with hotels, restaurants, villas and one of the island’s best marinas — Anse Marcel still manages to feel slightly hidden from the rest of St Martin.

Getting there

Where is Anse Marcel — and how do you get there?

Anse Marcel is located on the northern side of the French part of the island, behind the hills at the end of a winding road that feels almost intentionally hidden from the rest of St Martin.

There’s really only one easy way in: by car. From Princess Juliana International Airport, the drive usually takes around 35 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. From Grand Case, you’re about ten minutes away once you cross the hill. From Marigot, allow roughly twenty minutes.

The final descent into the bay is narrow and steep in a few sections, but it is also part of what gives Anse Marcel its atmosphere. You genuinely feel like you’re leaving the busy parts of the island behind as you drive down toward the marina.

Parking is usually easier here than at many beaches in St Martin, with several free public parking areas near the beach and marina. During busier periods, a small Mini-Moke shuttle sometimes circulates between the upper parking areas and the waterfront.

Victoria’s tip

A rental car is not optional here. Anse Marcel is at the end of its own road, and a taxi for a full day adds up fast. Renting gives you the freedom to pair it with Pinel Island, Grand Case for dinner, or Happy Bay on the way back.

The beach

The beach — calm enough to call it a lake

Anse Marcel — a horseshoe bay that keeps the world out

The sand is fine and white. The water is shallow and warm, with a lake-like stillness that comes from the bay’s natural shelter. The hills close around you on three sides, cutting the wind almost entirely. On most mornings, the surface barely moves.

This makes Anse Marcel one of the island’s most reliably comfortable beaches for swimming, regardless of what is happening elsewhere. It is also why families with young children return year after year — the slope into the sea is gradual, the water stays gentle, and nothing about the setting feels exposed or unsettled.

The beach stretches roughly a kilometre. The section in front of Le Domaine is organised around the hotel’s beach club; the rest remains public, with access near the water sports area. The bay sits on a slight northwest orientation — in the afternoon, the hills begin to cast shadow earlier than on east-facing beaches, so morning arrivals get the most sun.

At the far end of the beach, past the rocks, there is a small deserted cove: wild, quiet, and occasionally shared with a few cattle that seem to have made it their own. Worth the short scramble.

Good to know

Come in the morning for the brightest water and longest sun. Anse Marcel is one of the best French-side beaches for calm swimming, young children and a slower beach day.

The marina

The marina — Port de Lonvilliers

Port de Lonvilliers — the French side’s most sheltered marina

The marina at Anse Marcel — officially Port de Lonvilliers — is one of the best-protected anchorages on the island, sitting inside the Réserve Naturelle Nationale with berths for visiting sailors and a basin naturally sheltered by the bay’s geography.

What makes it worth visiting even if you are not arriving by boat is the Galerie Les Acacias — a small cluster of boutiques and services that grew up around the marina: concept stores, sushi, Italian dining, Creole food, a Casino supermarket, hairdresser, aesthetics studio and several watersports operators.

Bubble Shop organises dive excursions, Island Jet runs jet ski rentals, and charter operators such as Scoobitoo, Marinetime and Captain Jo use the marina for day trips to Anguilla, Pinel Island, Tintamarre and Saint Barths.

Good to know

Most French-side boat tours and day trips depart directly from Anse Marcel marina. If your vacation is built around the water, this is one of the most practical bases on the French side.

Where to eat in Anse Marcel

Le Domaine Anse Marcel Beach restaurant
Le Domaine Anse Marcel Beach — the bay’s signature beach restaurant experience

The dining scene at Anse Marcel is small but genuinely good. Le Domaine alone runs three distinct restaurants, and the marina adds a handful more — Italian, sushi, local Creole and casual terrace dining — so a full day here is easy to anchor around food.

Le Domaine — one address, three tables

Le Domaine d’Anse Marcel Beach is the culinary centrepiece of the bay. Behind one address, three restaurants with distinct personalities.

Anse Marcel Beach is the signature gastronomic table: French technique, Caribbean produce and refined plating. Le Gourmet is the evening restaurant, chic without ceremony. The Beach House is barefoot and beachfront, made for lunch with your feet in the sand.

Blue Sail Hotel & Restaurant

Overlooking the marina pontoons, Blue Sail serves French classics, club sandwiches, burgers and daily specials in an easy terrace setting. A good lunch stop if you like watching the boats come and go.

Marina restaurants

Around Galerie Les Acacias, you’ll find a small but useful mix of sushi, Italian dining, Creole food and casual options. It is not a huge dining scene, but it is enough to make the marina feel alive without becoming busy.

Good to know

If you want beach chairs, lunch and a more polished day by the water, book Le Domaine ahead in high season. If you want something casual around the marina, Blue Sail and the surrounding restaurants keep things simpler.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Anse Marcel

How far is Anse Marcel from Orient Bay?
