— The gourmet capital of the Caribbean
There’s a reason travelers who truly fall in love with St Martin almost always end up talking about Grand Case.
Maybe it starts with dinner. Maybe with the water — calm like a swimming pool most mornings. Maybe with those slow golden evenings when the boulevard begins to glow, the smell of grilled lobster drifts through the air, and nobody seems remotely interested in going to bed early.
Grand Case doesn’t try too hard. That’s part of the charm.
One long boulevard following the curve of the bay. Small hotels. Open-air restaurants. Locals drinking ti’ punch barefoot near the lolos while couples in linen shirts walk toward a three-hour French dinner they’ll still remember six months later.
And somehow, despite being one of the most famous villages in the Caribbean… it still feels human.
I used to live directly across from Le Cottage. Some nights, the smell coming from that kitchen was honestly unfair.

If you choose to book through them, I may earn a small commission — usually spent somewhere between a rum punch, a local lunch at the lolos in Grand Case, or a cold beer while watching the planes land in Maho. Where is Grand Case — and how do you get there?
Grand Case sits on the northwest coast of the French side of St Martin, between Marigot and Orient Bay.
From Princess Juliana Airport (SXM), expect around 25 minutes depending on traffic. From Orient Bay, barely 10 minutes. From Marigot, less than 15.
The village itself is wonderfully simple.
One main road — Boulevard de Grand Case — running directly along the beach from one end of the bay to the other. Restaurants, boutiques, beach bars, hotels… almost everything happens on or around that road.
You don’t really “visit” Grand Case with a strict plan. You park the car, start walking, and the day sort of unfolds by itself.
🚗 Victoria’s Tip — rent a car. Grand Case is easy to reach, but having your own wheels lets you explore Petite Plage, Happy Bay, and the quieter parts of the French side at your own pace. It makes a real difference.

The beaches — Grand Case Beach & Petite Plage
Grand Case Beach — calm, swimmable, easy to love
Grand Case Beach is not the most dramatic beach on the island. And honestly? That’s probably why people end up loving it so much.
No massive waves. No endless rows of umbrellas fighting for attention.
That said, Grand Case isn’t a deserted beach either — and honestly, that balance is part of why people love it.
Along the sand, you’ll find a few well-known beach restaurants like Rainbow Café, LTC – La Plage and Captain Frenchy, each with their own atmosphere. You can spend the entire afternoon moving between lunch, cocktails and the water without ever feeling rushed.
Rainbow Café is probably the liveliest of the three — especially on Sundays during high season, when DJs, rosé and sunset crowds can turn the beach into a much more festive scene.
But walk a little farther along the bay, and the atmosphere softens again almost immediately.
Just a long calm bay with shallow clear water, anchored sailboats offshore, and Anguilla sitting quietly on the horizon like part of the scenery. The water here is usually extremely calm thanks to the protected shape of the bay — perfect for floating, families with children, or simply spending three hours in the water without noticing time passing.
The beach runs directly alongside the boulevard, so the atmosphere feels different from places like Orient Bay. You can swim… then walk barefoot across the street for an espresso, grilled fish, or a glass of wine.
That balance is what Grand Case does better than anywhere else on the island.
Petite Plage — the quieter side of Grand Case
At the northern end of the village, just past Grand Case Beach Club, you’ll find Petite Plage.
Smaller. Softer. Usually quieter.
Most visitors drive right past it without realizing one of the prettiest little beaches on the French side is sitting just below them.
A short staircase leads down to calm turquoise water facing Creole Rock directly offshore.
In the late afternoon, the light here becomes ridiculous.
The kind of Caribbean sunset that suddenly makes everyone stop talking for a minute.
Sunset Café sits directly on the sand and somehow manages to make breakfast, lunch and sunset drinks all feel equally like the correct decision.
Restaurants on the boulevard — the real reason people come here
Grand Case didn’t become famous because of its beach. It became famous because this tiny village somehow built one of the best restaurant scenes in the Caribbean.
And once evening arrives, you understand immediately.
The boulevard changes personality entirely after sunset. Music drifts out from open doors. Tables glow beneath palm trees and verandas. The smell of butter, garlic, charcoal, fresh herbs and grilled lobster floats through the street from every direction at once.
Dinner here is not something people rush. Nobody’s trying to “turn tables.”
People sit. Drink wine slowly. Order dessert even when they said they wouldn’t. Then somehow stay another hour.
The restaurants everyone talks about
Le Pressoir
Probably the most respected restaurant in Grand Case.
Elegant without feeling stiff. Refined French cuisine with Caribbean influence, beautifully executed. One of those rare restaurants where almost everybody leaves quietly impressed.
Reservations are highly recommended in high season.
Ocean 82
Perched above the bay with panoramic views over the water toward Anguilla.
This is where people come for sunset dinners, seafood, champagne and long evenings that turn into vacation memories very quickly.
The view alone is worth it.
La Villa
A Grand Case institution. Warm service, consistently excellent food, and that perfect balance between upscale and relaxed that the French side does so well.
You walk in once and somehow they make you feel like you’ve been coming for years.
Bistrot Caraïbes
Famous for lobster thermidor — and deservedly so.
Cozy, intimate, slightly old-school in the best possible way. The kind of restaurant people return to every single trip without even questioning it.
Le Cottage
Still one of my personal favorites. Romantic lighting, beautiful presentation, excellent cocktails, and a softer atmosphere than some of the busier boulevard restaurants.
I may be biased after spending years living across the street from it… but honestly, the place really is special.
I actually wrote an entire guide about the restaurants in Grand Case — including the one I genuinely think might be the best restaurant in St Martin right now.
The lolos — because not every perfect meal needs white tablecloths
Long before Grand Case became the “gourmet capital of the Caribbean,” there were the lolos. And they still matter just as much.
Open-air local barbecue restaurants directly on the beach, serving ribs, chicken, grilled fish, rice, johnny cakes and plantains at prices that feel almost suspicious considering the location.
Plastic chairs. Cold beers. Smoke from the grills drifting across the sand. That’s the atmosphere.
And honestly? Some people end up preferring the lolos to the fine dining restaurants.
Sky’s The Limit is probably the best known. Huge portions. Excellent ribs. Zero pretension.
You order at the counter, grab a drink, sit facing the water and suddenly lunch becomes your entire afternoon. Exactly as it should.
Things to do in Grand Case
The beauty of Grand Case is that you don’t actually need to “do” very much. But if you want more than beaches and restaurants, there’s plenty nearby.
Snorkeling & watersports
Kayaks, paddleboards and small boat excursions leave directly from the beach near Petite Plage. The bay itself is usually calm enough for easy paddling, especially in the morning.

Creole Rock
Visible directly from shore, Creole Rock is one of the best snorkeling spots on the French side. Clear water, tropical fish, shallow reefs and occasional sea turtles depending on the conditions.
More on that just below.
Happy Bay
One of the prettiest hidden beaches on the island. Park at Friar’s Bay and take the short hiking trail over the hill — about 10 to 15 minutes.
No restaurants. No beach chairs. No loud music.
Just sand, water and silence.
Tijon Perfumery
A surprisingly unique experience in Grand Case. You create your own custom perfume with guidance from professional perfumers using hundreds of fragrance oils. It’s creative, different, and genuinely memorable.
→ Visit Tijon website
Snorkeling — Creole Rock & beyond
If you look out from Petite Plage, you’ll see Creole Rock sitting offshore in the middle of the bay. That’s the spot.
Part of the marine reserve, protected, and home to some of the most accessible snorkeling on the island. The water around the rock is usually calm and visibility can be excellent on good days.
Expect tropical fish, coral formations, sea fans, and sometimes turtles depending on the season and luck.
Technically, strong swimmers could reach it from shore. Realistically? Don’t.
Boat traffic and distance make it a bad idea.
The best option is joining a small guided excursion directly from Grand Case.
And yes — the turtle sightings around the nearby reef are very real.

Where to stay in Grand Case
Grand Case works differently from other parts of the island. You don’t come here for giant resorts.
You come for small hotels, boutique properties, beachfront apartments and places where you can walk to dinner every night without touching your car again.
That’s the luxury here.
Grand Case Beach Club
Probably the easiest hotel to recommend in Grand Case. Not because it’s the most luxurious on paper — but because it gets almost everything right for a Caribbean vacation.
The location alone is exceptional. Tucked at the quiet end of the village between Grand Case Beach and Petite Plage, the property feels peaceful and private while still being walking distance from all the restaurants on the boulevard. Two beaches directly on site, calm water, panoramic views toward Anguilla, and sunsets that honestly start feeling a little unfair after a few days.
The rooms are spacious apartment-style suites with full kitchens, terraces or balconies, and a relaxed “home away from home” atmosphere that works incredibly well in St Martin.
And then there’s Sunset Café — directly on Petite Plage — where breakfast somehow turns into lunch, and lunch somehow becomes sunset drinks without anybody questioning the life choices being made.
I would recommend Grand Case Beach Club for:
- first-time visitors to St Martin
- families wanting calm swimmable water
- couples looking for something relaxed but beautiful
- travelers who want to stay walking distance from restaurants without being in noise and traffic all day
Honestly, if someone asked me for the safest “you can’t really go wrong” choice in Grand Case, this would probably be it.
★★★★★"10/10 Excellent"
The most beautiful, relaxed, magical place. Just perfection—from the room, the view, the beaches, the staff, the location, and the food! It was absolutely amazing.

Hotel L’Esplanade
L’Esplanade feels less like a hotel and more like a hidden hillside residence overlooking the bay.
The moment you arrive, everything becomes quieter.
Perched above Grand Case in lush tropical gardens, the property has this elegant Mediterranean-Caribbean atmosphere that feels very different from the beachfront hotels below. Spacious suites with full kitchens, enormous terraces, panoramic bay views, a beautiful heated pool, complimentary yoga sessions, spa treatments at Ti Spa… the entire experience leans into calm and privacy rather than beach energy.
And the views are genuinely spectacular.
Especially around sunset, when the entire bay turns gold and the lights of Grand Case slowly begin appearing below you.
Despite feeling secluded, you’re still only a short walk from the restaurants — which creates this perfect balance between peaceful retreat and village life.
I would recommend L’Esplanade for:
- couples wanting something romantic and quiet
- honeymoon trips
- travelers who value atmosphere more than direct beach access
- people who want Grand Case without feeling “in the middle of everything”
This is the kind of hotel where people start speaking softer after the first evening.
★★★★★"10/10 Excellent"
One of the most pleasant hotel stays for my wife and I. Great people working there, beautiful grounds and pool, all very well maintained.

Le Petit Hotel
Le Petit Hotel is for people who want to wake up with the ocean basically at the edge of their bed.
Tiny boutique property. Right on the sand. No unnecessary extras. Just turquoise water, soft mornings, and one of the best beachfront locations in Grand Case.
The atmosphere here feels personal in a way large resorts can never really replicate.
Breakfast delivered to your terrace. Private balconies facing the bay. Direct beach access literally steps from your room. Kayaks and paddleboards sitting outside waiting to be used. And because the hotel is so small, the service naturally becomes more human and attentive.
One thing guests mention constantly is how peaceful it feels despite being walking distance from all the restaurants of Grand Case.
You can spend the evening drinking wine on the boulevard… then be back in your room listening to the water five minutes later.
I would recommend Le Petit Hotel for:
- couples
- barefoot luxury travelers
- people who prioritize location over resort amenities
- travelers who want a small intimate boutique experience instead of a “hotel complex”
Very honestly… this is probably one of the most romantic small hotels on the entire island.
LOVE Boutique Hotel
LOVE Boutique Hotel is probably the most “Grand Case” hotel in Grand Case.
Small. Stylish. Right on the beach. Right in the middle of the village. The kind of place where you wake up, open the balcony doors, and immediately see turquoise water before your brain has even fully started working yet.
The atmosphere here feels young, relaxed and effortlessly cool without trying too hard.
The beachfront rooms are the ones you want if possible. Private terrace, sand a few steps away, wine at sunset with Anguilla in the distance… honestly, it’s dangerously easy to start extending your trip here.
And the location is almost absurdly convenient.
You walk out of the hotel directly onto the boulevard. Restaurants everywhere. Beach bars nearby. Morning coffee five minutes away. No car needed once you arrive.
I would recommend LOVE Boutique Hotel for:
- couples
- younger travelers
- people who want Grand Case energy right outside their door
- travelers who care more about atmosphere and location than pools and resort facilities
This is not the place for huge resort luxury.
This is the place for barefoot mornings, sunset rosé, and accidentally staying out until midnight on a Tuesday.
Le Temps des Cerises
Le Temps des Cerises feels like someone took a stylish beachfront house, added excellent food, beautiful design, soft Caribbean light… and quietly turned it into a boutique hotel.
Only eight rooms, directly on the sand, with one of the prettiest views in Grand Case facing Creole Rock and Anguilla in the distance. The entire property has this refined but relaxed atmosphere that the French side does incredibly well. Elegant without ever feeling pretentious.
The restaurant downstairs is part of the experience.
People come here even when they’re not staying at the hotel — which usually tells you everything you need to know. Long lunches facing the water, beautiful plates, chilled wine, soft music, sunset light reflecting on the bay… it all blends together in a very dangerous “maybe we should book one more night” kind of way.
The rooms themselves are beautifully designed — clean, warm, intimate — with furnished balconies and direct sea views from nearly everywhere.
I would recommend Le Temps des Cerises for:
- couples wanting a romantic boutique experience
- travelers who care about aesthetics and atmosphere
- food lovers
- people looking for something intimate and genuinely memorable instead of a generic resort
Very honestly, this is one of the few hotels in Grand Case that genuinely feels cinematic at sunset.
Koho SXM (ex-Hévéa Hotel)
Koho is the kind of place people book “just for a few nights”… then quietly extend once they realize how practical the location actually is.
You walk out the front door and Grand Case is immediately there. Morning coffee across the street. The lolos five minutes away. Dinner reservations? Basically your entire vacation is now walkable.
And after a few days in St Martin traffic, that suddenly becomes a very beautiful thing.
The hotel itself is simple in a good way. Small tropical courtyard, relaxed atmosphere, recently refreshed rooms, no fake luxury pretending to be something it’s not.
Honestly, Koho understands something a lot of expensive hotels forget:
most people don’t come to Grand Case to stay inside their room all day.
They come to swim, eat absurdly well, have one more drink than planned at sunset, walk home barefoot after dinner, then do it all again tomorrow.
And for that lifestyle? Koho works extremely well.
I would recommend it for:
- couples doing St Martin properly — meaning mostly outside
- travelers who care more about location than resort amenities
- people who plan to explore the island during the day
- repeat visitors who already know Grand Case is where evenings tend to end anyway
Also: free parking in Grand Case may sound like a small detail now. Wait until high season. Then suddenly it feels like a luxury amenity.
If you prefer a vacation rental in Grand Case
Grand Case is honestly one of the best places on the island for a vacation rental. You wake up, walk for coffee, swim whenever you want, stop at the lolos for lunch, open a bottle of wine on your terrace at sunset, then walk to dinner without ever thinking about parking again.
Some apartments sit directly above the boulevard with terraces overlooking the bay.
Others hide quietly in the hills behind the village with incredible sunset views.
And once people experience Grand Case that way… they usually come back.
FAQ – Grand Case, St Martin
Is Grand Case worth visiting for just an afternoon?
Absolutely — but most people who come for an afternoon end up coming back for dinner. The beach, the lolos at lunch, and the boulevard at sunset are easy to fill three or four hours without effort.
Do I need a reservation for the restaurants in Grand Case?
For dinner at the fine dining restaurants — yes, especially from December to April. Le Pressoir, Ocean 82 and La Villa fill early. The lolos work on a first-come, first-served basis and rarely have a wait at lunchtime.
How far is Grand Case from Philipsburg?
About 25 to 35 minutes by car, depending on traffic around Simpson Bay. The road follows the lagoon — a straightforward drive with no tolls or border controls.
How far is Grand Case from Princess Juliana Airport?
About 25 to 30 minutes by car. From the smaller Grand Case Espérance Airport (SFG) on the French side, it's just five minutes away.
Is Grand Case beach good for families with young children?
Very. The bay is sheltered and the water stays calm and shallow close to shore. There's a large public area where you can spread out for free, and the lolos are relaxed enough for kids who don't want to sit through a formal dinner.
Can you snorkel at Grand Case beach?
Yes — the rocks at either end of the beach have fish worth exploring. Creole Rock, just offshore, is the standout site, but it's best accessed by boat rather than swimming from the beach. Creole Rock Water Sports at Petite Plage runs daily guided trips.
What is the difference between Grand Case Beach and Petite Plage?
Grand Case Beach is the main stretch — about 1.6 km of calm sand along the boulevard, with restaurants, water sports rentals, and good public access. Petite Plage is a smaller, quieter beach at the northern tip of the bay, in front of the Grand Case Beach Club, facing directly onto Creole Rock.
Where do I park in Grand Case?
There's a free parking lot at the north end of the main street. Street parking is also available along the boulevard during the day, though it gets competitive around dinner time in high season.
Is Grand Case expensive?
It depends entirely on where you eat. A lolo lunch — ribs, fish, sides, a beer — costs very little. Dinner at one of the fine dining restaurants can run $80–$150 per person with wine. You can have both on the same day without feeling it was too much.
Does Happy Bay beach near Grand Case?
Yes. Happy Bay is a short hike from Friars Bay, just a few minutes west of Grand Case. You park at Friars Bay Beach and walk a 10–15 minute trail. One of the quietest beaches on the island — no vendors, no chairs, no facilities. Just sand and sea.
