Airlines flying to St Maarten
Princess Juliana Airport is one of the busiest in the eastern Caribbean, with direct service from major US hubs, Canada, Europe, and connections throughout the region.
Most North American travelers arrive on American Airlines (from Miami and Charlotte), Delta (from Atlanta), or United (from Newark and Houston).
JetBlue operates seasonal and year-round routes from New York-JFK and Boston. Air Canada connects Toronto and Montréal during winter season.
From Europe, Air France offers direct flights from Paris-CDG — useful to know if you are staying on the French side and want to skip a connection.
KLM connects Amsterdam via the Dutch Antilles network. Air Transat serves the Quebec market during high season.
For inter-island travel, Winair (Windward Islands Airways) is the local carrier connecting SXM to Anguilla, St Barths, Saba, Sint Eustatius, and Dominica.
Several small regional airlines also operate charter and scheduled service to neighboring islands.
Getting from the airport to your hotel
One thing surprises first-time visitors almost every time: the island is smaller than they imagined. If you’re staying in Maho or Simpson Bay, you’re basically already there the moment you leave the airport parking lot.
Philipsburg is usually around 20 minutes away. Grand Case and Orient Bay take longer, mostly because traffic around Marigot can slow down quickly in late afternoon.
There’s no airport shuttle train, metro or public transport system like you’d find in larger destinations. St Maarten runs mostly on cars, taxis and hotel transfers.
Technically, local minibuses pass on the main road outside the airport area for a couple dollars per ride, but honestly, after a flight with luggage in Caribbean heat, most visitors either grab a taxi or pick up a rental car immediately.
And personally? I still think renting a car is one of the best decisions you can make on this island.
Car rental at SXM airport
If you want flexibility during your stay, picking up your rental car directly at the airport makes life dramatically easier.
Most major agencies — Hertz, Avis, Budget, Alamo — operate directly outside the arrivals area alongside several local companies. The process is usually quick once you clear customs, especially outside the Saturday rush.
Driving here is straightforward overall. People drive on the right, distances are short, and you can cross from the Dutch side to the French side in under 30 minutes without any border checkpoint.
The only thing visitors underestimate is traffic.
Around Simpson Bay, Cole Bay and the airport road itself, congestion can build surprisingly fast near the end of the afternoon — especially on days with multiple international arrivals or cruise ship traffic.
One small local tip: before returning your vehicle, fuel up on Airport Road toward Simpson Bay. It’s the closest gas station to the terminal and avoids unnecessary stress before departure.

Taxi and shuttle from SXM airport
The taxi stand is directly outside the arrivals exit — you will not miss it. Taxis on St Maarten operate on fixed government rates, so there is no haggling and no meter; the driver will quote the fare to your destination before you get in.
Fares are per vehicle, not per person, which makes them reasonable for couples and families.
Approximate fares from the airport: Simpson Bay or Maho — $10 to $15. Philipsburg — $20 to $25. Grand Case — $30 to $35.
Orient Bay — $40 to $50. These are rough figures; confirm with the driver before departure.
Taxis are available around the clock and there is rarely a wait during daytime hours. Late-night arrivals may take a few minutes longer as drivers circle back from hotel drop-offs.
There is no Uber on the island. Private transfer services can be booked in advance through your hotel or local tour operators — useful for groups or early-morning departures when you want the certainty of a confirmed vehicle.
Tips for picking someone up at Juliana Airport
If you’re picking someone up at SXM, the biggest mistake is trusting the scheduled arrival time too literally.
A plane may land at 2:00 p.m., but that doesn’t mean passengers walk out at 2:05.
On busy winter afternoons, immigration lines can move slowly — especially when several US or European flights arrive close together. Add baggage claim and customs, and it’s often smarter to leave home 45 minutes after the flight officially lands.
There’s a short-term parking area directly in front of the terminal, which is usually the easiest option if you arrive early. Waiting along Airport Road itself is not allowed and traffic police do enforce it regularly around the airport zone.
The practical move is simple:
watch the live arrivals board above, wait for the flight to switch to “landed”, then head toward the airport.
By the time you park and walk over, they’re usually coming out.
SXM airport — what you need to know
Princess Juliana International Airport sits in Simpson Bay on the Dutch side of the island and handles more than two million passengers a year — impressive for an island this size.
SXM is internationally famous for the landing approach over Maho Beach.
Aircraft arriving on runway 10 descend incredibly low over the water before touching down just behind the beach. The first time you see a large aircraft pass over the sand that close, it honestly feels slightly unreal — even after years living here.
Inside, the airport is modern again following the major reconstruction completed after Hurricane Irma. The newer departure area is far more comfortable than the old terminal used to be, with proper air conditioning, improved seating, duty free shops, restaurants and much better passenger flow overall.
For international departures, arriving two to three hours early is still the safest approach during high season. Security and immigration can move quickly some days… and painfully slowly on others. SXM runs on island rhythm sometimes — even at the airport.
