Friar’s Bay, St Martin: beach, restaurants & where to stay

Friar’s Bay. The kind of beach you keep coming back to.

Some beaches are all about the wow factor. Friar’s Bay is more about feeling at home. You come for a swim, find yourself a table for lunch, run into someone you know, and suddenly it's late afternoon. It's not the flashiest beach on St Martin, and that's part of why I like it so much.

Quick answer

Is Friar’s Bay your kind of beach?

Where

On the French side between Marigot and Grand Case. You turn off the main road and follow a little road down to the beach.

The water

A sheltered bay where the sea is often gentle enough for a relaxed swim. Check conditions before getting in, especially with children.

Best for

Families, long lunches, catching up with friends and making no particular plans for the afternoon.

Good to know

A car makes getting here easier. Happy Bay is a short walk away, and you'll find a very different atmosphere there.

Why I like it here

Some beach days don't need a plan.

Just come hungry. And bring your swimsuit.

People often ask me which beach they should visit, as though Saint-Martin has one answer for everyone. It doesn't. If you want watersports, rows of beach clubs and plenty going on, I'd probably send you to Orient Bay. But if you want to swim, take your time over lunch and enjoy an afternoon without checking your watch, Friar's Bay is a very easy choice.

It isn't deserted, and I wouldn't want to pretend it is. There are families in the water, friends catching up over a drink, music coming from the restaurants and the occasional lively weekend. That's part of the place. You can have a wonderfully lazy beach day here without feeling cut off from island life.

And if you do eventually decide to move, Grand Case is just up the road for dinner. Although after a long lunch at Friar's Bay, you might not be hungry again quite so soon.

The beach

A beach where the day takes care of itself

It's the sort of beach I'd suggest when someone says they want a beautiful place to swim, but don't want to spend the morning organising everything. You park near the sand, choose your spot and get in the water. The bay is often sheltered, though conditions can change, so do check before swimming.

And no, Friar's Bay isn't a secret beach with nobody on it. There are restaurants, loungers, children playing, friends stopping by and music in the background. That's what makes it feel lived-in. Mornings are generally quieter, lunchtime brings everyone together, and by late afternoon that lovely golden light makes leaving feel like a terrible idea.

Best time

Morning for quiet water, late afternoon for the warmest light.

Best for

Families, easy swims, long lunches and sunset drinks.

Think twice if

You want a resort-style beach club scene or water sports.

Beach restaurants

Three places to eat, three ways to spend the afternoon

This is one of the reasons I like sending people to Friar's Bay: you can pick the atmosphere that suits you. A long French lunch, a laid-back Caribbean beach bar or a more polished day on a lounger. Same stretch of sand, three very different afternoons.

Friars Bay Beach Café has never needed to reinvent itself for Instagram. It has its own personality: relaxed, very French, occasionally a little rock'n'roll, and absolutely part of the bay's story. That's exactly what I like about it.

Come here when lunch is an important part of the day, not something to grab between swims. Order fish, a good salad or whatever catches your eye, settle in with a drink and don't be in a hurry. It's the kind of place where the table can become your afternoon plan.

The older Caribbean soul

Kali’s Beach Bar

Kali's is a different side of Friar's Bay altogether. There's music, grilled food, cold drinks and that easygoing Caribbean atmosphere you can't create with matching cushions. Its legendary full-moon parties are part of the bay's history, but there's still a reason to stop by on an ordinary afternoon.

This is where I'd go for a beer, grilled fish or ribs and a rum punch, without making much more of an occasion of it. Sometimes that's exactly what a beach day needs.

978 brings a more dressed-up touch to Friar's Bay, without asking you to leave the beach behind. Think comfortable loungers, cocktails, a leisurely lunch and a little more attention to the details.

I'd look here for a day with friends or a couple's lunch that turns into the afternoon. Swim, come back to the table, order something else and enjoy the fact that you don't have anywhere urgent to be.

There's a practical reason I often recommend Friar's Bay to families: you don't have to make an expedition out of going to the beach. Parking is nearby, the restaurants are right there and the bay is frequently sheltered. Obviously, check the sea on the day and keep an eye on little swimmers.

Anyone who's tried to organise a beach day with hungry children knows how quickly the mood can change. Being able to order lunch without packing everything into the car is a real luxury. And the grown-ups might even get to finish their coffee.

Easy plan: spend the afternoon at Friar’s Bay, rinse off, then drive five minutes to Grand Case for dinner.

Nearby walk

Can you walk to Happy Bay from Friar’s Bay?

Yes. The path to Happy Bay, one of the wilder beaches on the French side, starts at the far right end of Friar’s Bay when you face the sea. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes. It isn’t difficult, but it’s a natural trail, so wear sandals or sneakers.

Good to know: Friar’s Bay is a family beach. Happy Bay is where clothing-optional sunbathing is sometimes part of the scene.

Where to stay

Make a little more time for Friar’s Bay

You won't find a row of big resorts lining this beach, and that's a good thing. If you'd like to stay nearby, look at the apartments and villas tucked into Mont Choisy and the hills around Happy Bay. Some have lovely sea views and pools; others are simply handy for a morning swim. Grand Case is close for evenings out, so you can enjoy the quieter setting without feeling isolated.

For a group of friends or a family who want to spend as much time by the pool as on the beach, Blue Sailing has plenty going for it: three en-suite bedrooms, a private pool and terraces looking toward the sunset. Both Friar's Bay and Happy Bay are within walking distance. If you're visiting during the SXM Festival in March, expect noise in the area.

Be Happy

The name sets the mood nicely. Be Happy is a three-bedroom villa in Mont Choisy with its own pool, sea views and room to enjoy the sunset without leaving home. Friar's Bay is close enough to walk to, which is a real plus if everyone in your group has a different idea of when the beach day should start.

Villa Happy Bay

If you're planning a special stay with family or friends, this is the kind of villa that makes it tempting to book an extra day just to stay home. Dream in Blue

Dream in Blue is for a holiday where the villa is part of the experience. Two heated pools, a jacuzzi, a sauna and views across to Anguilla make staying in a very appealing option. It is up in the hills above Happy Bay, with both beaches within walking distance, so you can alternate full beach days with doing absolutely nothing at home.

Getting there

Getting to Friar’s Bay: a car makes life easier

The beach is down a little road off the main route, and the sea doesn't really appear until you're almost there. I much prefer having a car for this one: you can arrive when you like, stay for the sunset and head to Grand Case afterwards without having to organise a taxi. Parking is close to the sand.

FAQ

Friar’s Bay: practical questions before you go

Where is Friar’s Bay beach in St Martin?

On the north-west coast of the French side, between Marigot and Grand Case. From the main road, follow the signs down to the beach. It’s about 10 minutes from Marigot and 5 minutes from Grand Case by car.

Is Friar’s Bay good for families with young children?

Yes. The bay is sheltered, the water is usually calm, the entry is gentle and parking is right behind the sand. The beach restaurants make the day even easier.

What restaurants are at Friar’s Bay?

Friars Bay Beach Café, Kali’s Beach Bar and 978 Beach Lounge. Each has its own mood: a long French beach lunch, a Caribbean beach bar, and a more refined beach lounge.

Is Friar’s Bay Beach Club the same as Friars Bay Beach Café?

Yes. Many visitors call it Friar’s Bay Beach Club, but the restaurant’s name is Friars Bay Beach Café. It’s the long French beach lunch spot in the middle of the bay.

Can you walk to Happy Bay from Friar’s Bay?

Yes. The path starts at the far right end of the beach when you face the sea, and takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Wear sandals or sneakers rather than going barefoot.

Is there parking at Friar’s Bay?

Yes, directly behind the beach. On weekends and holidays, arrive earlier.

Is Friar’s Bay a nude beach?

Where to stay near Friar’s Bay?

Most rentals are on the hills of Mont Choisy and Happy Bay, a few minutes’ walk from the beach: apartments for couples, villas with pools for families and friends, and a few luxury villas facing Anguilla. Grand Case, five minutes away, has the nearest hotels.

Can you snorkel at Friar’s Bay?

The water is calm and clear, but the main beach isn’t the best spot. The rocks toward Happy Bay are more interesting, and Creole Rock near Grand Case is better for serious snorkeling.

What is the best time to visit Friar’s Bay?

Morning for calm water and quiet, late afternoon for the light and sunset drinks.
